The Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) Initiative is a grant program collaboratively funded and managed by the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice. The SS/HS Initiative, which began in 1999, provides students, schools, and communities with funding to implement coordinated, comprehensive plans of programs and services that focus on promoting healthy childhood development; preventing alcohol and other drug abuse and violence; and promoting safe school policies and environments. Local education agencies (LEAs) or consortia of LEAs may seek funding through the SS/HS Initiative in collaboration along with their local public mental health authority, local law enforcement agency, and local juvenile justice authority. The SS/HS Initiative has six elements which successful grantees must address:
SS/HS Initiative grantees must provide students, schools, and families with a network of effective supports, and activities that promote positive mental health; prevent violent behavior and alcohol and other drug use; create safe, disciplined, and drug-free school environments; and engage parents, community organizations to help develop an infrastructure that will sustain successful grant components after federal funding has ended. SS/HS Initiative grantees are eligible for 3 consecutive years of funding. This web site is intended for use by national evaluation staff and site staff as part of the evaluation. |
